BRADFORD captain Tim Wade is sorry that the Yorkshire Inter-District League season is over after his side defeated Harrogate 25-11 at West Bradford in their final match.

The convincing triumph, on the back of a victory over Halifax-Huddersfield and a draw with runners-up Sheffield, lifted Bradford up to fourth in the final table.

Wade said: "Considering the turmoil at the beginning of the season, this is quite an acceptable outcome. It is just a pity that we don't have any more matches to keep the momentum going.

"Still, hopefully it all augers well for next season and we can carry on where we left off."

The Harrogate clash had been due to be played at Woodhall Hills but, due to a double booking, it was switched at six days' notice to West Bradford.

Wade said: "We would like to thank them most sincerely for taking the fixture. The presentation of the course was superb – and so was the catering."

Bradford also had to make a late change to their team, Wade calling up Ben Barker of Bradford for his first-team debut after prominent age-group displays – and he did not disappoint with two victories.

Barker replaced fellow junior Ben Cheetham and the hosts led 9-3 after the morning foursomes, with 3&1 wins for Chris Howe and JD Hussain and Henry Tetley and Barker, plus a 3&2 triumph for James Darcy and Jamie Mountain and a draw for Chris Green and Dane Bairstow. The only losers were Rob Malloy and Andy Busfield.

Wade said: "Chris and JD were never behind, Henry and Ben played well and James and Jamie coasted to victory. Chris and Dane gained an honourable half but Andy and Rob struggled."

Bradford were almost as dominant in the afternoon singles, winning the post-lunch session 16-8 as Malloy made up for the morning defeat by triumphing 7&6 in the final match.

Wade said: "Chris Green got us off to good start by beating county player Jack Lampkin on the 17th.

"But Dane, who was one up with two to play, missed a short putt on the 17th for a half in a birdie and then lost the last to another birdie to lose by one hole.

"However, wins for the ever-improving Jack Laybourne, Terry Brushwood, Chris Howe and JD Hussain saw us move into a commanding lead.

"Then Andy lost 3&2 but Jamie won on the last, Henry lost on the last and James, who was feeling unwell after lunch, lost 2&1."

Barker capped his debut with two victories.
