WEST Bradford's ladies are celebrating one of their best-ever seasons.

They qualified in first place for the last four of the Yorkshire Inter-Club Championship A team competition, winning 32 matches to finish top out of 117 teams across the county.

They then beat Ganstead Park at Oakdale to reach the final against Moortown, who proved just too strong for them as West Bradford had to settle for runners-up spot following a 5-2 defeat.

However, reaching the final for the first time in their history – and doing so by winning the leading qualifiers trophy – left lady captain Maureen Williams and her 13-strong team beaming with pride.

"How fantastic for a really small club like West Bradford to get to a major Yorkshire final," she said.

"We were presented with a silver salver for qualifying as leaders and we drank champagne to celebrate afterwards.

"It's been an experience I will never forget and it has been an enormous privilege to be captain of this team."

Williams said the atmosphere at Oakdale was "electric" and revealed the team were "blown away" by the support in the final against favourites Moortown.

"Even though we lost 5-2, the scoreline doesn't tell the whole story as two of the matches were lost on the last hole," she said.

West Bradford's success story this year does not end there as Heidi Biggs and Eileen Dovernor won the Yorkshire Ladies County Foursomes title.

After pairing up together for the first time this season, they made it through regional qualifying and then won in the final at Hillsborough Golf Club in Sheffield.

They carded a four-over-par nett 78 to win the title by one shot.
