Will Whiteoak won the Bradford Matchplay Championship singles title in what he described as “the worst conditions I’ve ever played in” as Bingley St Ives took home three prizes.

The reigning T&A Golfer of the Year beat Rob Hillas of Shipley in the semi-finals to set up a meeting with Baildon’s James Firth on the latter’s home turf.

Whiteoak then beat Firth in a final that went down to the wire, claiming victory by just one hole.

“I was really delighted with the victory but those are the worst conditions that I’ve ever played in. It was horrific,” said 19-year-old Whiteoak, who has had an up-and-down season after a strong start.

“There was torrential rain and wind, which was so difficult to play in, but I was really pleased to get the win in the end.”

Speaking about his performances overall this year, Whiteoak added: “I started off really well and won a tournament in Wales with a score of 16 under but I’ve been hit and miss since.

“I played well for the Bradford Union team but I missed out on the England squad at the end of the year and my target is now to get into that by the end of next season.

“But I’ve got the North of England Championships at the start of October so hopefully I’ll be able to continue my strong finish to the season.”

Dane Bairstow and James Devaney made it a double for Bingley St Ives as they won the foursomes matchplay after beating Cleckheaton’s Chris Hall and Danny Green.

Henry Tetley then made it a hat-trick of victories for Bingley by coming out on top in the junior matchplay, beating Josh Bullough from Calverley and then Callum Hey of Keighley.

Phil Nutter and Lewis Walls of Bradford South took home the inaugural handicap foursomes, the duo winning against Ghyll's Andy Gibb and Jonathan Schofield.
