Crow Nest Golf Club captain Shaun Higgins continued his excellent run of form by claiming his second club major inside a week.

What makes this achievement all the more impressive is that Higgins had previously won only one Crow Nest major in 2004, and had therefore gone almost ten years without another.

Playing some of the best golf of his life, he stood eight shots behind the leader on day one but shot a nett 62 on day two to win the Crow Nest by three strokes.

On Saturday, September 14 Higgins had won the re-arranged Thompson Shield, the club's oldest major competition.

The conditions under which a record field of 108 played were near perfect, with calm but bright weather and receptive, flawless greens.

The position of the pins were initially thought to be tough, with a number hidden behind bunkers or tucked away in the corners. However, the scores returned dispelled that idea as 17 players returned totals under par.

Higgins won by one shot from best gross scorer Tom Holmes, who returned a gross 71, nett 66.

Holmes took the runners-up place on countback from Richard Langley-Webb who, playing off a handicap of 11, returned a gross 77. In fourth place was Steven May, who scored a creditable gross 75, nett 67.

The Thompson Shield was given to the club by the late Sir Donald Thompson and was first played for in 1996. Lady Thompson attended the evening's presentation and presented prizes to the winner and runners-up.

Higgins, after his recent haul of major titles, has had his handicap reduced by four strokes in the last week, and now plays off his lowest-ever mark of 5.6.
