Avenue 7, Bridlington Town 0

Avenue stormed to the top of the UniBond Division One North table with a seven-star display against relegation-threatened Bridlington Town that consolidated their position as favourites to lift the title.

The east-coast outfit defended bravely against the probing attacks of the home side, who were looking to gain the maximum they knew would take them to the summit.

The only goal of the first half came in the 13th minute and was scored by in-form Mark Bett, who netted his first for the club in Saturday's 3-1 victory over Wakefield.

Bett took a through-ball from Tom Baker before beating two defenders and slotting home.

Avenue finally broke the spirit of the second-bottom visitors as they went on the rampage in the second half - but only in the last 33 minutes.

Midfielder Ross Clegg set the standard with a thundering drive for the second goal after a Chris Gaghan corner had been headed out of the area.

Mike Moseley was next on the scoresheet, tucking a shot in at the back post after Paul Gedman had helped on a Tris Whitman cross.

Gedman added the fourth with a firm shot from ten yards - again from an assist by Whitman, who had come on from the bench in the second half. His introduction gave Bradford a three-pronged attack with Moseley and Gedman.

The attacking quality of Avenue was too much for Bridlington to cope with and another three goals in the last eight minutes underlined the home side's superiority.

Gedman took a through-ball and played it wide for Whitman, who netted an angled drive from just inside the area.

Danny Warner set up the next but it was another stunning finish from Clegg. Warner jinked into the area along the line and cut the ball back for Clegg to lash into the net.

The three forwards combined for the final goal in the last minute. Gedman began the move, Moseley provided the killer pass and Whitman slotted it into the corner.

The chairman will feel justified in sacking the manager a few weeks back when they were third or fourth in te table. A very risky move, but seems it's paying off.
