Northwich Victoria 2, Bradford Park Avenue 1
Avenue suffered a reverse in their first away fixture of the season tonight at Northwich Victoria, who were in the Conference North last term.
The Vics are expected to be one of the promotion favourites in the Evo-Stik Premier but it was Avenue who took the game to them. Simon Collins’ side dominated the attacking play in the first quarter of the game.
After just five minutes, a corner delivered by Avenue skipper Martin Drury was headed goalwards by Adam Clayton but well saved. The visitors forced another handful of corners in that early period.
Northwich got their noses in front with a touch of fortune just before the half-hour as a pinball moment in the Avenue area ended with the ball at Andy Fowler’s feet, and he shot home.
With half-time approaching, Avenue could have levelled when Luke Gibson was put through, but he blasted his shot over.
In first-half stoppage time, a free-kick into Avenue’s area led to the referee awarding a foul against James Knowles, and Vics’ Wayne Riley slotted in from the spot.
Avenue had to weather a spell of pressure from the home side after the break but hit back in the 65th minute.
A long ball from Knowles was headed on by Tom Greaves, and Clayton finished well. Avenue had late chances and a strong penalty claim when substitute Kevin Sanasay went down in the area but could not produce an equaliser.
