THERE was widespread surprise when James Knowles and Nicky Boshell departed Horsfall Stadium during the week with Mark Bower’s squad already threadbare.

Knowles has been a cornerstone of the Park Avenue defence throughout the first third of the campaign while Boshell, younger brother of assistant manager Danny, has been injured but was just breaking back into the side.

Bower said, “Sometimes you have to do things for the greater good which at the time you don’t like doing.

“They are two great lads and they’ve done really well for us in my time at the club and for Bradford Park Avenue in previous spells here. They have been two of my most reliable players and I’m sorry to see them go.

“They are good players and have been great in the dressing room and on the training ground. Knowlesy came back here when we were struggling last season, at a time when we were lacking quality and experience and he played a big role in keeping us up.

“Nick was a big part in the good late run we had that kept the club in the National League North. He’s had his problems with the injury that prevented him doing pre-season but he’s been involved recently.”

It is understood that the players were released as the result of a board decision. It would suggest a further cost cutting measure after the club’s media manager had his employment terminated as part of a re-structure behind the scenes.

There has been no statement from the club since the announcement on Monday that the players had left the club. That came just two days after both had been involved in the 2-1 home defeat to new leaders Salford City.

Knowles posted on social media, saying, “Sad to leave Bradford Park Avenue but it was not my decision and a shame when it’s not for footballing reasons.

“Onto the next challenge – just got to find a club first. Cheers to all the supporters who have been great with me over the years and it’s been a pleasure to make over 200 appearances.”

Club historian Tim Clapham said, “James finished with 230 appearances which puts him firmly in fourth place for the revived club.

“Wayne Benn leads the way with 416, Jason Maxwell had 268 and Andy Quinn 241, they are the only players to have made more appearances. Nicky finished with 132 from his spells with the club.”
