MARK Bower was pleased with the fitness of his Bradford Park Avenue squad on their return to action and he feels that the inclusion of three of the club’s Academy players highlights the quality coming through.

Avenue romped to a 6-1 victory on Tuesday over near neighbours Campion who play in the Northern Counties East League.

Bower sent on forward Andre Tavernier, goalkeeper Alfie Steven-Neale and defender Lewis Johnson for the last half hour.

Bower said: “They did well when they came on and certainly didn’t look out of place in the side.

“It was a good experience for them and now that they've had a taste of it I’m sure they will be even more determined to make the breakthrough on a more regular basis.

“The three of them have trained with the first team and have done well so they deserved the opportunity to show what they could bring to the first team. It’s good to see that some of the lads are at that level and it raises the profile of the Academy.

“It’s nice to see it doing well and really it’s only in its infancy so it’s a very good start and I’m sure the Academy will have a very important role in the club’s future.”

Bower was happy that his players got what they needed from Tuesday’s game. After a handful of training sessions they have now begun to get match fit and Campion provided a good test.

“I was quite impressed with their levels of fitness when they came back in and they have worked hard in training since day one of pre-season,” said Bower.

“It was time for a game and I think it was as good for Campion as it was for us because at this time of year it’s all about fitness and avoiding injury.

"We got a bit of football played, scored a few goals which is always a good habit to get into, and had a look at the young lads and trialists.”
