Guiseley 0 Barnsley 2

MARK Bower’s Guiseley had another tough pre-season game as they lost at home to new Championship outfit Barnsley last night.

The Tykes netted a goal in each half to claim a narrow but hard-earned victory at Nethermoor, just three days after Guiseley had held Bradford City to a 1-1 draw.

Guiseley had a good chance to open the scoring but close-season signing Michael Rankine’s strike from outside the area was just wide.

Minutes later, Barnsley were in front, James Carvell converting a good cross.

The Tykes sealed the game when substitute Stefan Payne, who had played at Nethermoor for Dover last term, netted a good finish after being picked out by a through ball.

Having already won one and lost one of their friendly fixtures, Bradford Park Avenue drew their latest game.

They were pegged back to 1-1 by a late strike at Hallmark Security League Premier Division outfit Nelson.

It was another excellent work-out for new Bradford boss Alex Meechan’s players, and they took the lead just after the quarter-hour.

Andy McWilliams’ cross came back off the crossbar but fellow former Guiseley player Liam Dickinson netted the rebound with an acrobatic shot.

The Lancashire host’s keeper Steven James did well to deny both Nicky Boshell and Joe Noblet later in the first half.

Avenue made one change during the break but introduced six other substitutes later in the second half.

Nelson levelled through a superb dipping volley from the edge of the area and, although Avenue created more late chances than the home side, there was no winner.

Liversedge romped to 7-1 home win over local side Oakenshaw, despite going a goal down.

Sedge were 6-1 up by the interval and Vaughan Redford added the second half’s only strike to claim a hat-trick.

Joe Walton (2), Steve Wailes and Jevan Benjamin were the other players on target for Sedge.

Silsden’s scheduled friendly was called off late on after a tea-time phone call from hosts Oxenhope confirmed that a waterlogged pitch had forced the cancellation.
