AFTER six weeks of seemingly endless rain, it was the sub-zero temperatures that decimated the sporting fixtures over the weekend.

Following a deep overnight frost, there was no non-league football locally, and three of the area’s semi-pro clubs were thwarted as their away fixtures also fell victim to frozen pitches.

Bradford Park Avenue should have hosted Evo-Stik Premier Division promotion chasers Nantwich Town in the FA Trophy, and the home side were full of hope after a local referee declared the pitch at the Horsfall Stadium fit.

However, the first inspection was held at 10.30am and the outcome of it was dependent on temperatures rising before kick-off.

Despite a clear sky and bright sunlight, not to mention the hard work of Bradford’s groundstaff and many volunteers, some areas of the pitch were still solid when the match referee arrived at 1pm, and he deemed it unplayable.

It has now been re-arranged for Wednesday. FC Halifax Town were also denied by the weather and have re-arranged their home tie with National League counterparts Barrow.

The Shay was frozen over, and Saturday’s scheduled tie was shelved after a mid-morning pitch inspection.

The clubs will make a second attempt at the MBi Shay Stadium tomorrow (Tuesday).

The game being called off was a major disappointment to a weekend that began on a positive note with the signing of Nicky Wroe.

The midfielder had been back at The Shay on loan from Notts County but following his release by the Sky Bet League Two outfit, he has made the move permanent.

Farsley Celtic and Brighouse Town were both frustrated by postponements as just three of 11 games in Evo-Stik Division One North beat the weather.

The Celts were seeking their tenth consecutive win in all competitions but were prevented from travelling to Droylsden.

The call-off cost the Celts 12th place in the table but the Bloods retained their 16th spot.

Paul Quinn’s Town also lost a place as they dropped to tenth, while their hosts Clitheroe were also overtaken, dropping a place to eighth.

Thackley were due a home game in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division.

Pickering Town were the scheduled visitors but the pitch at Dennyfield was rock hard and failed a morning inspection.

Relegation-threatened Silsden’s trip to third-placed 1874 Northwich was called off early, so the Cobbydalers remain in the drop zone.

Ryan Haigh’s men do have games in hand but a fixture glut at the end of the season would be a nightmare scenario.
