THE only frustration for Bradford Park Avenue boss Martin Drury during pre-season is that he has not been able to give two of his three main forwards enough game-time.

Last season's top scorer and players' player of the year Chib Chilaka and close-season signing Massiah McDonald have both been nursing injuries. That has put strain on James Walshaw, another summer signing, and trialist Seb Carole.

Chilaka missed the first three friendlies and finally made an appearance towards the end of Monday's match at home to FC Halifax Town, although he only got just over 20 minutes on the pitch.

McDonald was sidelined for the first two warm-up fixtures but came on for the second half in last Saturday's win at Farsley Celtic.

Drury said: "It's not been ideal that Chib and Massiah haven't played enough – but we can't complain too much about the way pre-season is going.

"The two lads have been carrying injuries and that's prevented them from getting important minutes in their legs.

"Massiah had the full second half at Farsley and you could see that he was well behind the other players in terms of match sharpness. That will improve rapidly now because he will get time in the remaining games.

"It is all about preparation for the season and we're delighted with the way things have gone in general. The opposition in every friendly game have been excellent. They have all played well and given us a really good test.

"Results don't matter but I've been pleased with the way we have defended and with the work the midfield players have put in – they've dictated games."

After today's home meeting with promoted Guiseley, Drury has just three games left to access his players and finalise his squad. That will mean making some very tough decisions.

The Avenue manager said: "I can't fault the effort or attitude of the players as they've shown tremendous determination. They all came back with great fitness levels and have worked hard since.

"I would really love to keep all of the players – each and every one of them. But I can't and that's down to finances only.

"The players have the ability and have all shown that they want to play and do well for the club. I'm going to have some very difficult conversations with some of them and that's the worst part of this job."
