Elite runner Chris Carver is to represent England at the Commonwealth 24-Hour Championships in Llandudno this week.

The Friday and Saturday event will earn the Otley Athletic Club member his fourth international vest in two years.

Carver first represented his country at the inaugural Commonwealth Ultra Distance Championships in Keswick in September 2009.

That was also a 24-hour race and he finished fifth after covering a distance of 231 kilometres (143 miles). He also won a team silver medal and was the leading Englishman.

Carver’s second international competition was the World 24-Hour Championship in Brive, France, in May 2010.

In the highest-quality field ever assembled for a 24-hour race, he finished 53rd out of 229 entrants with a distance of 222km (138 miles).

Although disappointed with this run in France, he was pleased to come away with a team bronze medal from the concurrent European Championships.

In September 2010, Carver ran in his third international 24-hour race. This time it was in Perth, Scotland, and the organisers had invited England, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy to send teams to join the host nation.

He definitely redeemed himself after the disappointment from four months earlier, winning with a new personal best of 238 km (148 miles) as England also won the team event.

That distance remains the best performance by a Commonwealth athlete in a 24-hour race since May 2010.

A minor knee injury at the start of this year limited Carver’s training but since Easter he has stepped it up and is confident of increasing his best again – and topping more than 150 miles in a single day for the first time.

Such a distance could see him return home with medals in both the individual and the team event.

Carver said: “This won’t be an easy task but I know it’s achievable, given the right conditions.

“My training, especially in August, went exceptionally well and culminated with a training week of well over 35 hours, which included running, cycling and strength training.”
