Chloe Ryall was the surprise package in Sunday’s WEST YORKSHIRE WINTER LEAGUE, her fifth-place finish for Baildon Runners reaping the benefits of recent training with Leeds City AC.
Karen Pickles (Pudsey Pacers) took her second win of the series, followed by a trio from Leeds-Bradford Triathlon Club – Lois Rosindale, Karen Hallas and Donna Edmondson.
The course at Black Carr Woods is normally muddy but a hard frost, giving way to bright sunshine, left runners with a tricky choice of footwear.
This led to the rare sight of spikes, road shoes and studs being utilised by the first three men finishers.
The classic woodland cross-country track featured two laps of the woods, culminating in a knee-buckling climb to the finish.
Rhys Davey (LBT), a European triathlon youth gold medallist in 2008, took the lead at the halfway mark and held on strongly to win the men’s race from Quentin Lewis (Baildon) and Chris Loftus (Stainland).
Stainland’s Ben Mounsey and Gav Mulholland took commitment to extreme lengths, managing sixth and eighth places on top of their second-fastest 9.5-mile leg of the Pennine Bridleway Relay earlier that morning.
In the team event, host club Pudsey Pacers exploited home advantage to win the male and veterans’ races, with LBT heading the ladies.
Stainland remain the overall leaders ahead of the final event at Dewsbury on Sunday, February 21.
Meanwhile, other teams were competing over five legs in the 47-mile PENNINE BRIDLEWAY RELAY, climbing 6,300 feet around Burnley, Hebden Bridge and Todmorden.
The event was won by fell-running specialists Horwich RMI. Calder Valley were an excellent third, with Adam Breaks and Jason Stevens second fastest on the final leg.
But the Calder men were outdone by their ladies’ team, who came in 34th overall to win that category.
Wharfedale Harriers were seventh home from 87 teams, beating local rivals Pudsey & Bramley (14th) and Keighley & Craven (17th). Bruce Elsworth and Ted Mason were third fastest on leg three for Wharfedale.
