Rebekah gets Ennis bonus in steel city

Denholme’s Rebekah Tiler got more than she bargained for in the Yorkshire Regional Sportshall Athletics Festival at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Not only did the 11-year-old Har-den Primary School pupil win the vertical jump to help the West Yorkshire girls’ Tykes team win their section but she also had her picture taken with her idol Jessica Ennis.

The world heptathlon champion, who is from the steel city, was taking part in the high jump at the North of England Indoor Championships in the main hall next door.

Following successful trials at the Richard Dunn Sports Centre last month, the two West Yorkshire under-11 girls and two West York-shire Under 11 boys’ teams qualified for these Yorkshire & Humberside finals.

The match at Sheffield not only featured the West Yorkshire Tykes and West Yorkshire Terriers, but also Hull & East Riding and South Humberside.

The West Yorkshire Tykes’ girls scored 480 points, with the West Yorkshire Terriers second with 437, just one point in front of Hull & East Riding, with South Humberside fourth with 395.

Other individual winners were Hannah Brierley (chest push), Rebecca Godfrey (standing long jump), Ambah Thompson (balance test and standing triple jump) and Hannah Stead (soft javelin).

The girls’ Tykes also won the 4x1 relay, the Paarlauf relay, the Grand Prix and the hurdle relay.

The West Yorkshire girls’ Terriers won the obstacle relay and the speed bounce, won by Charlotte Hankin. Their other individual winner was Lucy Byram (balance test).

The West Yorkshire Tykes boys’ team were also overall winners with a score of 469, coming first in the obstacle relay, 1+1, 4x1, over and under, Grand Prix and the Hurdle relay, with just two points dropped in the Paarlauf relay.

Individuals topping the rankings were Tobi Adeniji (triple jump), Lewis Pickering (speed bounce) and Ben Jarvis (balance test).

West Yorkshire’s boys Terriers were just pipped into third place with 431 points, just three points behind Hull & East Riding, with South Humberside fourth with 394 points.

The Terriers finished second to the Tykes in most of the relays but finished top in the vertical jump, with Liam Colgan winning the soft javelin.
