Dominant Watkins still out in front

Steve Watkins of Baildon continued his domination of Airienteers’ Summer Sprint League with victory in the fifth event of the series.

Watkins won the main race at Baildon Moor, north of Shipley, by two minutes from clubmate Steve Webb.

The course, featuring plenty of climbs and numerous pits and depressions, provided a tough test for the 40-plus runners.

Grace Elson, from South Yorks Orienteering Club, was first woman home in third place, followed by Dave Alcock and Tony Thornley.

The league standings, with one event remaining, see Watkins retaining his narrow lead from Alcock, with Ian Marshall just holding on to third place by a point from Nick Jones.

Meanwhile, a number of Airienteers members ventured into the forests at Dalby, near Scarborough, for a local event organised by the York-based Ebor club.

On the longest, brown course, Watkins finished runner-up to Clive Parry (South Ribble), with Neil Conway and Tony Carlyle also having good runs to finish fourth and ninth respectively.
