Giving it a Bash in fine conditions

Organisers Skyrac Athletics Club were blessed with perfect weather for the second running of the Esholt Bash trail race from their clubhouse at Nunroyd Park.

Only two days earlier, a storm had caused extensive flooding by raining heavily for over three hours.

But luckily the course had dried out and was not too muddy.

The race has more than doubled since last year’s first running, with 95 enjoying a testing route with a tough uphill finish from Esholt Woods into Guiseley.

First home was Michael Keedy of Leeds-based St Theresa’s AC in 37min 59sec, followed by in-form Will Kerr (St Bede’s) in 39min 3sec.

Third spot was held by Bingley’s Paul Mitchell.

In the ladies’ race, first home was Isabelle Rowe of Harrogate Harriers, finishing 19th in 45min 13sec.

There was an impressive turnout from local clubs, including Bingley Harriers, Ilkley Harriers, St Bede’s, Idle AC, Baildon, Eccleshill and Pudsey Pacers, which made for good competition.

The race covered the full age spectrum, with the oldest competitor being the familiar face of Basil Thompson of Otley, proving that a spritely 77-year-old can still enjoy local off-road races.
