Bruce an almighty success at Kettlewell

Kettlewell’s limestone moors welcomed a new five-mile race last Thursday.

Two sharp climbs with a total of 1,800 feet of climbing marked the 25th anniversary of north Leeds’ Abbey Runners club.

Wharfedale Harriers’ Bruce Elsworth followed up his victory at the Weets fell race the previous day, winning by almost three minutes.

Pudsey Pacers’ Karen Pickles was fifth, just a further minute back.

There were only 41 runners (Skyrac’s Graham Breeze was 16th and first M60 in 49min 9sec) but this event is sure to attract more runners in future years.

Ilkley’s Hector Haines won the Buckden fell race on Saturday, with minute gaps ahead of Ted Mason (Wharfedale) and Tom Anderson (Winchester), before a big gap to a group of seven headed by Pudsey & Bramley’s Steve Bottomley.

The fell-race season is now in full swing, with races almost daily.

Most village shows in the Dales have their races. Many offer courses suited for juniors, and they are always inexpensive to enter.

Wharfedale Harriers’ fixture-list gives races in the Pennines and the Lakes (www.wharfedale harriers.org.uk/fixtures).

Guiseley-based Skyrac AC are particularly specialised in fell running for all abilities and are holding their second Esholt Bash trail race on Wednesday evening (June 24)this evening.

It is a multi-terrain 10k race round Esholt Woods.

Registration is possible from 6pm at Nunroyd Park clubhouse, with the start at 7.30pm. Entry is only £6 for runners who are not members of clubs.

Meanwhile, 11,000 took to the streets of Leeds for the Jane Tomlinson Run for All on Sunday.

Club runners were prominent among the hordes, with 14 from Pudsey Pacers and 11 from Eccleshill Road Runners enjoying the carnival weather.

Pudsey Pacers’ James Clarke was 15th, behind the guest runners which included Tipton marathon international Dan Robinson, the winner in 30min 51sec, over a faster route than previous years.
