Horsforth schoolboy Sam Convery stepped up to 800m for the first time on Saturday, May 9, and covered himself in glory. He stormed to a bronze in the under-13 category at the Yorkshire Track Finals held at the Don Valley Stadium.
Though still only 11 years of age, the Bingley Harrier, Sam, outgunned much of the opposition from athletes mainly two years older.
Sam qualified from his heat in 2min 35sec in second place to earn a place in the final and improved 2 seconds in the final.
Despite being left in last place on the first lap, Sam conjured up an explosive finish to reel in the leaders and almost snatched gold.
An elated Sam said that he was really nervous in the final because he had never run a heat before and was in front of a large crowd of spectators against older athletes, but he enjoyed the experience.
