Yorkshire Division Three: Leeds Modernians 29 Baildon 28

AFTER gifting the home side three tries and butchering five of their own opportunities, it is fair to say that Baildon beat themselves in this Yorkshire Division Three derby at Cookridge.

The first present came after Joe Robinson caught the kick-off and set up phases of attack, Matty Robinson kicking down the slope and recovering the ball to feed Robbie Hill.

An overlap was on and a try looked on the cards, until a flat pass was intercepted by a Mods centre, who scored.

Despite twice kicking the ball dead, Baildon were next to score after winger Nathan King was tackled high.

The visitors kicked the ball to the corner, Tom Peel won the line-out and Danny Pollard went over for Matty Robinson to convert superbly from the touchline.

Baildon's scrum, aided by the slope, dominated, but well-constructed phases were stymied by knock-ons, despite hard running by Guy Price, Adam Hewitt and Matty Dixon.

A classic example was when they again kicked a penalty to the corner, Peel catching and finding Pollard, who drew the last defender and passed to Dan Cookson, who knocked on over the line.

Baildon should have been out of sight by now, but inexplicably conceded a five-metre scrum by running the ball into touch and lost Luke Strauss to a yellow card for a high tackle.

The visitors' defence was over-stretched and the home left winger scored a try which was neatly converted to make it 12-7.

Worse was to follow when Baildon's defence slumbered, allowing the Mods scrum half to wander over unchallenged, but the Jenny Laners then roused themselves, Dixon turning over possession for Cookson and Hill to put Harrison Strauss over for Matty Robinson to convert.

Trailing 17-14 at half-time, Baildon then conceded a penalty for not tapping the ball through the mark, conceding a five-metre scrum and a penalty try, which was converted to make it 24-14.

Then, juust as King looked as if he was going to score, the winger over-ran the ball and tipped it into the waiting hands of the Mods winger, who ran the length of the pitch to score.

Cookson then threw an outrageous dummy to score a try and put the visitors back in with a shout at 29-21 before they were held up over the line after a series of attacks.

Baildon then promptly butchered a five-man overlap before losing man of the match Joe Robinson to a dead leg.

Dixon finally crossed after Hill had thrown a dummy, and the conversion put Baildon within a point at 29-28 and, despite knocking on the restart kick, they had one more chance, but Dan Fletcher could not gather his kick ahead, the ball rolling into touch to siganl the final whistle.

Mods also won the Jenny Lance clash by a point - 13-12 in December.
