Yorkshire Division Two: Old Grovians 42 Sheffield Medicals 19

OLD Grovians, whose names on the teamsheet were more like those that started the season, showed some spark to triumph after a run of gloomy results.

Jack Hartley, Toby Harris and Harry Garforth returned from injury and new signing, hooker Stuart Smyth, was on the bench.

The first ten minutes were back and forth with penalties being given away by both sides, before Grovians had their first try-scoring opportunity, Jaskaran Deu making a good run before offloading to James Trenholme, who got within five metres of the line before an offload to Lewis Brook bounced off the No 8's chest.

Medicals missed a shot at goal, but hooker Matthew Worrall then forced a penalty which Ben Brown kicked.

Brook, Paddy Burns and Harry Garforth were all thwarted close to the visitors' line but they turned over the scrum for Joe Garforth to score a converted try, making the half-time score 10-0.

Within two minutes of the restart, Brown had extended that lead to 16-0 via two penalties, but then Joe Sowden's quick reactions stopped a Medicals try before Burns was yellow carded for a deliberate knock-on.

However, the hosts made light of being depleted, with Sowden, Tom Gough, Harry Hardy and Brown creating the opportunity for Harris to side-step a defender for the first of his three tries in the half.

Brown converted for 23-0 but Grovians then seemed to relax, allowing the visitors in for two converted tries.

Duly shaken up, Brook carried the ball strongly upfield for Grovians, Gough being stopped five metres short but offloading to Harris, who took two Medicals defenders over the line with him.

Medicals bagged a third try but by now much-improved Grovians were making good yards with every carry and, although Brook was stopped just short, the bonus-point try came two phases later via Burns on the wing.

Hartley's splendid run from inside his own half put the home side on the attack again and, although Sowden was denied, Harris went over for his third try, with Brown converting.
