Yorkshire Division Two: West Leeds 50 Old Grovians 10

THIS scoreline didn't reflect the amount of possession that Old Grovians had but it did reflect the excellent handling and running of the leaders, who reached a half-century of points despite having three players sin-binned.

However, the first half was close, with the visitors, hit by unavailability and with people playing out of position, missing two opportunities that they might have taken on another day.

In the second half, despite Grovians having far more of the ball, the hosts ran in some good tries from distance.

At least the visitors showed that they could impose some pressure and kick well for position, although their line-out still needs some work, as does their finishing.

But the club's future in this division will not be decided by matches against West Leeds and Keighley but by contests against clubs who are nearer to the Apperley Bridge side in the table.

Joe Harrison put the visitors ahead with a penalty, but missed one either side of this success, West Leeds soon taking the lead with a converted try, and adding an unconverted try before half-time to make it 12-3.

Anthony Griffin saved a try early in the second half, but within 15 minutes of the restart, West Leeds are away and clear at 31-3.

Nevertheless, most of the final 25 minutes belonged to Old Grovians, West Leeds showing their clinical nature by scoring tries on the three occasions that they managed to carve out an opportunity.

Harrison went over for a converted try for the visitors, for whom centre Jack Hartley made some great carries.

Old Grovians, seven points above a relegation place with a game in hand, have targeted three wins from their final nine matches, which should put them securely just below halfway in the table.
