Cleckheaton 26, Old Brodleians 12
Cleckheaton and Old Brodleians battled for the Fred Scott Trophy for the first time in three years yesterday, hosts Cleckheaton getting the verdict 26-12.
In front of a bumper crowd in spring-like conditions, Cleckheaton opened the scoring in a whole-hearted encounter with a try by No 8 Richard Piper after a period of forward pressure, winger James Wilson crossing under the posts just before half-time after a strong diagonal run.
Fly half Iain Gordon converted both after Brods pressure had failed to produce any reward between the scores.
Piper’s second try, again converted, made it 21-0 in the 47th minute but Brods, much to their credit, responded with two tries by winger Josh Allen, fly half Tom Booth adding a conversion.
Changes were made by both teams to give everyone a run out but the hat-trick try by Piper sealed matters in a contest by two strong teams that befitted the memory of Fred Scott.
