BRADFORD Salem's 'Mr Versatile' has won their players' player of the year award.

Sam Savage, who featured in all 31 of the Yorkshire Division One club's matches in 2015-16, played in no less than SEVEN positions for the first XV in that time.

Almost half of his appearances came on the wing (14), while Salem's head-guarded hero also figured at open-side flanker (five matches), outside centre (five), scrum half (four), inside centre, blind-side flanker and No 8.

Bradford Salem's rugby chairman Neil Klenk said: "Sam is consistent and dependable, and he is also our most consistent trainer.

"He has also taken it on board to deal with our kick-off reception, and I cannot remember him dropping one.

"It's all very different from many years ago when we had a winger called John Huggan.

"When a kick-off went towards him, the pack used to line up behind him ready for a scrum!"

Abhishek Brar was named most improved player at the club's Summer Ball at the Midland Hotel, while Sam Riley was the second team's player of the year.

Louise Masters was Salem ladies' most improved player, while their player of the year was Emily Bagguley.

Clubman of the year was executive committee member Andy Taylor, who installed a state-of-the-art till system in the clubhouse and, alongside Eric Donaldson, was responsible for tidying up the club's driveway and surrounds of weeds and brambles.

Meanwhile, New Zealander Lachlan Moore cleaned up at Bradford & Bingley's presentation night, which was held in their clubhouse.

The centre, who scored 22 tries in his 25 appearances and won eight man of the match awards during the season, was named players' player of the year and first XV back of the year, also receiving a club tie for making 21 or more appearances in 2015-16.

Back-rower Tom Booth (four man of the match awards) was forward of the year, and he also received a club tie, as did No 8 Tom Cummins, winger Nick Gore (16 tries) and prop Michael Crotch.

Second XV awards went to Tom Shaw (forward of the year), Harry Collis (back of the year), while Bumbles winners were Ahsan Sakandar (forward of the year), Stephen Rhodes (back of the year) and Michael 'Giddy' Whitaker (players' player of the year).

Former British and Irish Lion John Bentley, from Cleckheaton, was the speaker.

Flanker Jack Seddon won Cleckheaton's players' player of the year award (John Bower Trophy), while Luke Pearson was most improved player, taking the Gomersal Trophy.

Will Denham won the Bernard Fox Trophy as second XV players' player, while Clubman of the Year was junior welfare officer and junior fixture secretary Hannah Curley, who took the Donald Ross Trophy.

Martin Gold was the comedian, and the event was held in the clubhouse.

* Bradford Salem's annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 12 at their Shay Lane clubhouse (7.30pm).
