Yorkshire’s senior side may have lost their opening two matches in the County Championship but their under-20 side have given them some consolation by becoming national champions.

They won a heavyweight contest 28-22 against Gloucestershire at Worcester.

“We may have scored plenty of points during the campaign, but it was our defence that won the day,” said Yorkshire’s team manager Keith Dyas (Wibsey).

“If we had defended like we did in the semi-final against Hertfordshire, we would certainly have lost but we’ve been working on that aspect of our game and we improved dramatically.

“It was a much higher-quality performance and we deserved the win. I think the midweek session we had with the Yorkshire senior side definitely helped.

“We played really well in the second half, but Gloucestershire were still coming back at us strongly and the game went right to the wire.

“As a non-Yorkshireman said to me afterwards, your side played with real Yorkshire grit, and that about sums it up. They did really well.”
