Pride was the overriding emotion for Ilkley Rugby Club’s operations manager Tom Gillon after watching his team play at Twickenham last Saturday in the RFU Intermediate Cup final.

The Dalesmen went down 34-18 to a powerful East Grinstead outfit but Gillon said: “We were ahead with 22 minutes to go.

"They are used to winning matches by 40 or 50 points and they were not expecting us to go 11-0 ahead, and I was immensely impressed with our first 20 minutes.

"We did exactly what we said we would do in our game-plan and dominated them up front. They were visibly shocked.”

Gillon added: “It was a fantastic experience overall and we have got masses of publicity out of it which we hope will attract more players.

“Having been to Twickenham, we will certainly be giving the Yorkshire Shield (their pathway to headquarters) a different priority next season.”
