THE three-team Bank Holiday Monday tournament at Jenny Lane proved a refreshing throwback.

It involved hosts Baildon, Skipton and the Bumbles, and Skipton's coach Dave Duxbury admitted: "Quite a few of our players hadn't come across the Bumbles before and I got a few texts from my players that evening saying that they had forgotten that this is what rugby union was about - having fun and not so much a win-at-all costs attitude.

"It also gave Baildon and Skipton the chance to have a blowout before they return to league rugby this Saturday."

The Bumbles were playing their second and third matches in six days after last Wednesday's 41-38 defeat to the Yorkshire Referees' Society.

But they didn't let that worry team as they won both their matches, starting with a 14-12 defeat of Skipton.

Bumbles coach Dan Cookson said: "Cameron Smith, who was man of the match against Skipton, scored again, making it two tries in as many matches after his debut against the referees, while Ahsan Sakandar performed a move that wouldn't have looked out of place in the Premiership.

"We were running a move down the right when he beat two defenders by handing them off, which so shocked him that he didn't put the ball down behind the try-line for about five minutes!"

Anthony Brooke was man of the match for the Bumbles against Baildon, but big Lee Hainsworth had to content himself with being touch judge, having picked up an injury against the referees.

Phil Wilson distinguished himself by playing three matches - for the Bumbles against Skipton and for Baildon against both the Bumbles and Skipton - while all three matches were refereed by former Baildon back Jolyon Dobbs.

Baildon's president Mark Purvis, who is the Bumbles' honorary medic, said: "It was a great day of rugby played in the right spirit and everyone appreciated the run-out.

"The Bumbles stayed on afterwards in the clubhouse - it was a cold day - for a pint and a bite to eat while they watched Baildon play Skipton."

Skipton defeated Baildon 12-5 in the final match.
