YORKSHIRE Division Five can sometimes be a weird and wonderful world.

Take this Saturday for example, where champions Wibsey have called off matches at home to Withernsea (league) and at Knaresborough (Keith Dyas Cup) in order to play a league match at home to Rossington Hornets that probably isn’t going to take place!

Wibsey’s chairman Steve Brooke explained: “People just haven’t been looking at the RFU’s Yorkshire Division Five fixture page, which was updated before Christmas.

“Withernsea thought they were coming to us this Saturday, but that has been re-arranged for a week on Saturday, while Knaresborough thought they were visiting us for a Keith Dyas (Yorkshire Division Five) Cup tie, which we will play later in the season.

“The irony is that we have had to give priority to Rossington Hornets, who we don’t think will be able to send a side over as they crossed off against Mosborough last Saturday, which is only 20 miles away.

“We hope to hear more by this morning, providing that we haven’t heard anything after training last night, but we could end up with a blank weekend.

“Providing that Rossington send someone up with a match card for us to sign, we can claim the five points, otherwise we face having to re-arrange it.”

Nevertheless, although they are missing James Birkbeck and Chris Partridge, Wibsey will be picking from 37.

Brooke, who will now make good his promise to have a ‘Wibsey champions 2016-17’ tattoo on his calf, explained: “We want to give the fringe first-team players a chance and then backfill.”
