Yorkshire Division Two: Knottingley 36 Old Grovians 14

OLD Grovians may have lost their penultimate game of the season but their status in the eighth tier was secured for another season thanks to a defeat for Barnsley, while Leodiensian can't catch Old Grovians either after only gaining four points at home to Old Rishworthians.

Second-from-bottom Knottingley, who have a game in hand on the three clubs above them, still have a chance of staying up, and cashed in against visitors who were both missing regulars and had others playing who were carrying knocks.

Grovians pressed from the off but coughed up plenty of turnover ball as Knottingley bagged a converted try, the visitors levelling after No 8 Christian Baines carried the ball 20 yards and scrum half Tom Gough took the move even further before Danny Secker got the try, with Ben Brown converting.

A penalty put the hosts 10-7 in front and they either avoided defenders or profited from an overlap to score two more converted tries before half-time to make it 24-7.

However, the visitors came close before half-time when Anthony Griffin, playing at full back, made good ground, as did Dean Hogg before Dion Hendricks chipped the last defender but was adjudged in touch.

Two more Knottingley tries swiftly made it 36-7 and, although Hogg was yellow carded for preventing a quick tap penalty and Gough fractured a tibia in a clash of legs with Knottingley's No 8, they did get the last points when Baines powered over for a converted try.
