SSE Yorkshire Division Three: Castleford 3, Old Grovians 35

OLD Grovians took a major step towards the championship with a convincing win at their closest rivals.

The visitors' defence was not breached and this, allied to their ability to score from anywhere on the pitch, proved a potent combination.

The first half was a combination of each side testing each other as well as learning how the referee applied the laws, Castleford taking the lead with a 15th-minute penalty after Jack Hartley was held up over the line for the visitors.

With Anthony Cadman proving a mastermind behind the visitors' pack, however, Christian Baines forced his way over for a try, Adam Weaving's difficult conversion going over via the inside of the post.

The visitors were again held up over the line before half-time but the hosts had no answer to Cadman's generalship, Weaving''s kicking and the commitment of the rest of the team in the second half.

Weaving dummied his way over for Grovians' second try, converting it himself, and Hartley got the third try three minutes later, Weaving's conversion again going over via a post.

Leading 21-3, the visitors secured the four-try bonus point thanks to an overhead pass by Cadman, Chris Blackhall then putting in Ben Brown from 20 metres out.

Weaving converted and, after more solid defence had kept out Cas, Old Grovians scored again when James Yates touched down in the corner after a series of testing grubber kicks, Weaving keeping his 100 per cent record with the conversion.
