BULLS captain Kirsty Moroney and Featherstone Rovers player Sarah Dunn will be flying the flag for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service at the Women’s Rugby League World Cup.

Moroney, from Halifax, is an emergency control operator for the fire service and has been playing the sport for 20 years.

She is a seasoned World Cup professional, having been part of the previous two competitions.

Before joining the brigade control room two years ago, she worked in the fitness industry.

The scrum-half, who helped Bradford to a domestic clean sweep of trophies this season, said: “Even though I know what to expect, I am still extremely proud to play for my country.

“I am a little nervous as I don’t think any of us are prepared for just how big the tournament is going to be.”

Dunn, who lives in Leeds, has been a firefighter since 2003 and has been playing rugby for four years.

“She helped Featherstone become Super League runners-up but will join Moroney in Australia to play in her first World Cup.

She said: “It’s quite surreal. I never thought it would happen, so I’m just excited to get out there.”

The Rovers centre added that being a firefighter had similarities with playing rugby league.

She said: “There are many benefits to being a firefighter which tie in with rugby.

You have to work as a close-knit member of a team to succeed.”

England will play their games at Southern Cross Group Stadium in Sydney against Papua New Guinea on November 16, Australia on November 19 and the Cook Islands on November 22.

The semi-finals will take place on November 26 and the final will be before the men’s final at Brisbane Stadium on December 2.
