IN THE big game of the day in Pennine League Division Two Central, Clayton not only secured two league points, they also earned the all- important local bragging rights when they defeated Birkenshaw 31-24.

Derby games usually offer plenty of excitement and entertainment, and this match was no different.

Clayton were playing their seasonal opener and will have been delighted to get straight off to winning ways.

Winger Danny Priestley proved virtually unstoppable, with his constant surges to the line bringing him four tries.

Matt Baldwin also chipped in with a touchdown, while Ryan Wilkinson bagged three conversions, two penalties and a drop goal.

Robbie Cass and Ben Mather bagged a brace apiece for Birkenshaw, with Tom Pickles adding a fifth. However, it wasn't enough to give them victory.

Birky's stand-out men on the day were veteran Simon Owen, with a tireless display, along with Jarrod Toulson and Paul Bancroft.

Wyke were unlucky to be defeated in their opener as they lost out in a thriller 34-28 against Woodhouse Warriors.

Wyke raced in to a 16-0 lead, thanks to two tries from Calvin Barker and one from Coby Kittsen as the Warriors struggled to maintain their discipline.

The Warriors hit back to make it 16-12, but with captain Jordan Payton rallying the troops and young props Bobby Stewart and Jonny Fawthrop answering the call, Wyke regained control.

Kittsen added his second, while Cameron Foster also crossed the whitewash.

The Warriors again hit back again, this time with unanswered tries, but when Tevin Campbell scored a fine solo effort with just five minutes left, it looked like the home side had sealed victory.

However, two late tries in the dying minutes of the game helped the Warriors return to Leeds with both points.

Queensbury were unable to make it two from two as they were edged out 14-11 at Beeston Broncos.

In the Kingstone Press National Conference League Division Two, Dudley Hill comfortably beat visitors Leigh East 22-6.

First-half tries from loose forward Andrew Walker, centre Daniel Lee and Anthony Huby, plus a Simon Sewell conversion, put Hill well in control.

Second-row Anthony Lawton then crashed over to extend their lead to 18-0 and see them well on their way to victory.

Full back Aiden Batey rounded off the scoring for Hill, who maintained fourth spot as they stayed in touch with the leading pack.

West Bowling lost out to promotion rivals Stanningley 30-16 in an epic Division Three tussle.

With the scores at 16-16 just before the hour, it was anybody's game, but a try to Adam Benn and a hat-trick effort from Ben Selby put the game out of Bowling's reach.

The game was nip and tuck all the way, and thanks to tries from Liam Coe and James Crabb, plus a Harry Williams conversion, Bowling led 10-6 at the turnaround.

The home side quickly extended their lead after the break when the lively Nick Fontaine crossed and Williams secured the conversion.

However, that was the last of the Bowling scoring as Selby showed some fine finishing to post his three second-half tries.
