Cougars prove they're the real deal

Full back George Rayner crossed twice for the Cougars in their splendid victory

    Keighley Cougars 26, Oldham 12

Red-hot Cougars proved they are realistic challengers in Co-operative National League Two with a clinical destruction of previously unbeaten Oldham today.

Keighley are now joint top with Ellery Hanley's Doncaster after maintaining their own 100 per cent record and racking up a fourth successive league victory.

They led just 14-12 at half-time following a tight first period but Barry Eaton's side kept Oldham scoreless after the restart and powered home with all three points.

Played out in front of a bumper crowd of nearly 1,300 at Lawkholme Lane, the Cougars showed their is plenty of substance to their early-season form.

Eaton said: "We've had some good wins in my time here and actually beat Oldham last year.

"But they weren't as formidable then as they potentially are this time.

"This is a side tipped to be one of the title favourites, yet we were deserved winners.

"Oldham scored first, and probably looked slightly better early on, but it was nip and tuck.

"Then certainly in the lead up to half-time and that second half we were on top."

Eaton continued: "The most pleasing aspect was the lads took on board what we've discussed all week.

"Training had been really intense and they carried out the game-plan I'd set.

"We've shown now we are capable of beating the perceived title favourites.

"We weren't lucky to beat them either; we were the best side.

"It's a great win but we've still got our feet firmly on the ground."

Full back George Rayner and second-row Neil Lowe both scored doubles, with Danny Jones booting five goals.

Former Bulls ace Marcus St Hilaire went in for Oldham, along with Mick Nanyn, who also booted two kicks.

But Keighley did the job without top prop Andy Shickell, whose wife went into labour yesterday morning - she gave birth to a baby boy last night - causing a late re-jig for Eaton.

He added: "It was a really good team performance but I thought my back three - Ryan Smith, George Rayner and Gavin Duffy - returned the ball fantastically.

"They gave us the opportunity to get out of our danger zone but we also scored two tries directly form kick returns.

"Ryan Smith bust up the middle and put Neil Lowe over and then Gav Duffy went 80 metres to put George Rayner in.

"We've got next week off now before we go to Doncaster. That will be a really massive game."

Before the match i discussed the relative merits of both teams with some oldham fans and mentioned that although i expected the cougars to lose it would be great to pick up a bonus point, but wow! what a performance in the mud for our lighter team. thank you lads.
