West Bowling prop Phil Chappell will swap the glorious sunshine of Jacksonville, Florida for the rigours of a wintry Northfield Road on Saturday.

He makes his usual cameo appearance against Wibsey Warriors in the Pennine League Premier Division clash of the day.

The Bradford-based bobby, who was the assistant player-coach on the recent successful police tour to America, will be in a squad aiming to repeat the 39-32 scoreline they achieved in the first encounter between the sides at the Bankfoot Oval.

The Warriors will contend that Bowling caught them cold on that occasion, when they were in the process of finding their feet in the Pennine top echelon, and now have the fire power to turn the tables on their near neighbours.

Three crucial members of the Warriors line-up spent time in Bowling colours. Full back Mike Derrick won a BARLA international under-23 cap and scrum half Andy Robinson had his first taste of senior rugby at the club.

Packman Mike Kite played alongside his mentor Chappell last term and will know what to expect when the burly prop enters the fray.

Queensbury speedster Luke Brearcliffe and in-form second row forward Ash Ryan are fit and ready to make the journey to Queens.

Coach Andy Senior is confident of his side’s chances now that the injury list is clearing, a view echoed by his fellow compatriot Scott Pendlebury, who is also seeing some light at the end of the injury tunnel at Clayton.

The Villagers face a tough trip to Hunslet Old Boys, who triumphed 38-18 at Lidget Green, but player coach Pendlebury gained welcome relief with last week’s postponements, giving his casualty list breathing space.

Birkenshaw will see their Division One title ambitions take a giant step to fruition if they see off Crigglestone All Blacks at East Bierley. Both sides are level pegging, just four points behind leaders Bank Top Harriers, who enjoy the day off with a game in hand.

The Division Two derby between West Bowling A and Odsal Sedbergh will attract its usual good following. The game is due to start at the Bankfoot Oval but could be switched to Emsleys Rec if conditions dictate.

Undercliffe make the journey to Division Six basement club Cowling Harlequins. Rugby union convert Aidan Scully makes his debut but Ben Chandler and Liam Jarvis miss out with knee injuries. Tackling machine Mat Pitman might be available after recent work commitments.
