VICTORIA Rangers cruised into the second round of the Andrew Bennett Trophy with a 40-14 home win over Woodhouse Warriors.

The Vics, not for the first time this term, could only field 12 men but made light of their reduction in numbers to post eight touchdowns from Jake Butterworth (2), Aiden Scully (2), Sam Thornton (2), Jake Swinscoe and Jordon Walker.

Rangers prop forward Ashley Yarrow won the man of the match award hands down after a powerful performance.

In the Pennine League, Wyke was no match for Division One leaders Ovenden as they went down 58-10 on their journey to Halifax.

The black and whites could only muster five regular first-team players but coach Warren Pitman was full of praise for the second-string players who filled the breach.

Wyke gave as good as they got for 25 minutes until Ovenden's pace, power and experience took its toll.

Two tries from Sam Kittsen and a man of the match display by ex-Ovenden skipper Shaun Godfrey gave some degree of satisfaction.

Pitman said: "I am really proud of the guys that took the field. I asked for a strong performance, pride and some bottle.

"To be fair, I got that from everyone. They did the little things right but the difference in skill level was very apparent."

Brighouse Rangers produced a heroic display before going down 16-10 at the death in a home encounter with Kingston Press League One outfit Hemel Stags.

Any thoughts from the professional visitors that this pre-season run-out was going to be easy was soon dispelled when Rangers half-back Jake Hyde kicked the ball through, allowing second-rower Anton Ambler to touch down at the uprights, scrum half Jamie Barraclough adding the extras.

Hemel were spurred into action and responded instantly with a flowing move for Josh Halliday to score in the corner.

Yet Brighouse continued to dominate, with Barraclough and Hyde combining to feed former Stags player Ben Waud, who popped up a great ball for hooker Troy Ambler to cross for a 10-4 interval lead.

Injuries to centre Liam Stead and half-back Hyde sapped the home energy and with, ten minutes to go, Hemel winger Charlie Brown scored in the corner to level the scores.

Brighouse, to their credit, continued to look for the winning try but with seconds remaining the Stags managed to find Brown once more and he outstripped the Rangers defence to post the winner.
