Pennine League Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy first round: Brighouse Rangers 60 Wyke 18

WYKE conceded eight tries in a second-half mauling as Brighouse Rangers won their first-round Pennine League Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy tie 60-18 at Russell Way.

However, the black and whites should have hit the front from the start, only for centre Ryan Exley to narrowly fail to collect a bomb with the line at his mercy.

They paid the price of letting the ball bounce following a tit-for-tat return kick to allow Rangers centre Joe Campbell to collect and cross, leaving stand-off Jamie Barraclough to add the extras.

Brighouse hooker Troy Ambler showed a smart change of pace to race over in style, and added another cracker when he intercepted a Wyke pass to race the length of the field to the posts.

At 16-0, Rangers were coasting until they lost the plot with an astonishing lack of discipline.

Prop Ben Waud was dispatched to the sin bin after comments to the referee, and Wyke seized the chance to take a quick tap and run when they spotted full back Karl Frankland out of position to put substitute forward Mark Goodwin on a barging run to the chalk.

Wingman Ben Procter added the extras after a short delay caused by Frankland venting his frustrations to the match official, which led to a yellow card.

Things took another turn for the worst for the hosts when prop Lee Robson was caught punching in the scrum to earn another ten minutes on the touchline, and the visitors clawed their way back into contention with a slick passing move to put second-row forward Alec Williams over the whitewash, and Procter ensured a further reduction in the deficit to bring the half to a close at 16-12.

Brighouse, restored to a full complement shortly after the restart, came out all guns blazing to put their neighbours to the sword.

Wingman Reece Bray collected his brace in quick succession, soon followed by a powerhouse effort from Waud.

Substitute three-quarter Richie McGlade used his blistering pace to collect another couple, and the cool calm and collected Barraclough ghosted over for a superb effort to crown a marvellous performance.

A shell-shocked Wyke looked like a collection of strangers who had just met at a bus stop when Frankland crossed for a late brace to finish the game.
