A SPLENDID second half hat-trick from second row forward Damian Smith was meagre consolation for Birkenshaw Bluedogs in their 36-16 home defeat against Dewsbury Celtic.

The visitors used the Pennine League Division Three game as a warm up for their entire summer team pending the forthcoming National Conference campaign – and the gulf in ability was evident as they raced into a match-winning 20-6 half time lead.

Birky came roaring back in the second period with Smith and his fellow packman Callum Dinsdale leading the way, aided and abetted by hooker Nathan Hadfield who bossed the ruck to great effect.

Full back Gary Procter showed his usual calmness under pressure and also contributed two conversions to the total.

But the comeback was blighted when loose forward Callum Wilkins suffered a serious wrist injury that will see him miss the rest of the season and scupper his planned move to join Dudley Hill for the summer season.

Brighouse Rangers' hopes of posting a double over Division One table-toppers Illingworth never materialised with only a Troy Ambler touchdown plus a Gavin Midgley conversion to show for their efforts in a 28-6 defeat.

Clayton could also only register a solo try in the 38-6 reverse on their visit to Division Two leaders Ossett Trinity Tigers.

The Villagers' coaching duo of Scott Pendlebury and Jonny Alderson again had to contribute full 80-minute stints and were full of praise for a gutsy performance that saw Jamie Waterman cross the whitewash.

Division Four basement boys Wyke suddenly sprung to life in the second half to give title chasers Kinsley Hotel Raiders a run for their money.

The 32-10 scoreline failed to reflect the black and whites' valiant efforts against the hosts who are hot on Queensbury’s heels in the quest for the silverware.

Two touchdowns from Charles Growcock and Brett Grey gave them hope before the Hemsworth-based outfit regained their supremacy to ease home in comfort.

Clayton, who are the holders of the Jack Senior Memorial Bradford Cup, will defend the trophy with a home game against Queensbury.

Victoria Rangers have also drawn a home tie against Odsal Sedbergh, together with Wibsey Warriors who will welcome Wyke.

Birkenshaw have a bye and the ties will be played on Saturday, February 18 (kick-off 2pm).
