PENNINE League Division Four table-toppers Queensbury had to pull out all the stops to prevent hosts Beeston Broncos from pulling off a shock win.

Bury looked to be coasting when wingman Chris Hanson went over in the corner, which was soon followed by another touchdown from second-row forward Luke Cheney, leaving marksman Ethan Egerton Sharp to add the extras for an early 10-0 lead.

However, the loss of full back Alix Stephenson with damaged ribs caused a reshuffle which triggered a decline in their fortunes, encouraging the Leeds side to hit back with three converted tries to change ends 18-10 up.

The Broncos were cock-a-hoop when they went further in front on the restart but an ear-wigging from Bury’s joint coaches Tom Middleton and Angelo Ricci got the show back on the road.

Bury increased the tempo appropriately for Hanson to cross once again at the flag, with Sharp slotting over the touchline extras.

Teenage scrum half Joel Charlton confirmed his promising talent when he offloaded in style at the base of a scum to send the mighty Cheney en route to the posts, leaving Sharp to close the gap to 24-22.

Tries from Chris Greenwood and Danny Whittaker proved in vain for Silsden, who slipped to a 48-12 win at home to Wortley Dragons.

In a rousing finale, Queensbury were in the ascendency and they claimed the spoils when three-quarter Cameron Parry used his strength to reach the chalk, and Sharp claimed the bonus with seconds to spare in a nail-biting 28-24 victory.

In Division Three, Birkenshaw Bluedogs let an early lead slip through their fingers before eventually falling to a 28-22 home defeat against Greetland All Rounders.

Hooker Nathan Hadfield prised open a gap to send prop Adam Lazenby en route to the whitewash, and scrum half Gary Procter added the conversion, but a bevy of mistakes and silly penalties led to the visitors taking command.

A well-timed run from packman Callum Wilkins renewed Birky’s hopes and there were signs of a revival when Lazenby claimed his brace early in the second half.

The introduction of young forwards Connor and Callum Parkinson, plus a masterclass from veteran Callum Dinsdale, led to wingman Danny Graham reaching the chalk, and Procter landed the extras in the closing stages but the All Rounders held on to claim the points.

Wyke A ensured Division Four title-chasers Siddal had to graft for their 32-28 home success.

Wingman Tom Stones bagged a brace on his return from injury, and further efforts came from Ryan Exley, Calvin Barker and Jordon Payton.

Full back Brett Grey was a tower of strength in defence, ably supported by loose forward Phil Oliver and old favourite Andy Naylor.

Tries from Chris Greenwood and Danny Whittaker were not enough for Silsden as they slumped to a 48-12 win at home to Wortley Dragons.
