BRIGHOUSE Rangers produced a stunning display to knock leaders Illingworth off their Division One perch in a 24-12 cracker.

The Rangers set the tone when a move straight from the practice pitch saw full back Karl Frankland join the attacking line to send centre Sam Hardcastle over in the corner.

A clever interchange from pack colleagues Ben Waud and Ronnie Bailey created the gap for standoff Jake Hyde to scamper under the uprights, leaving scrum half Jamie Barraclough to add his second conversion and he was once again on target following a penalty for a head high tackle.

The hosts suffered a blow when substitute Matty Bailey left the fray with a broken arm but they continued their headway when Liam Stead spotted a narrow gap to cross for another converted effort to close the half 20-0 up.

Illingworth increased their ferocity in the second half, but the Rangers rearguard was clearly up to the task with its effective sliding defence. And when second row forward Ben Waud galloped clear to hurdle the fullback for their final touchdown the game was in the bag.

The Halifax visitors rallied to register two converted tries as the hosts tired legs took hold, but it was too little too late to prevent the hosts claiming the spoils.

Wyke gave unbeaten Ovenden a run for their money before falling to a 46-26 home defeat. The Halifax Conference outfit fielded a team full of experienced summer players but Wyke equalled them toe-to-toe with packmen Ian Wormald (pictured), Ben Kelly and Lee Birkett to the forefront.

Three-quarter Gary Worley celebrated his return to the first team with a touchdown and a fine solo effort from Scott Watson levelled matters during the close first half before the visitors rapid fire attack took its toll.

The black and whites youngsters Calvin Barker (2) and Jordon Payton earned their spurs with further tries in the second period.

Birkenshaw came within a whisker of lowering Division Three leaders Eastmoor Dragons colours for the first time before falling to a heart wrenching 20-18 home defeat.

The opening half ended 12-12 following tries from centre Damian Smith and prop Andy Berry both converted by Jarrod Toulson.

Adam Lazenby latched onto a grubber kick from hooker Matty Honysett to put them 18-12 ahead on the restart and they will regret the decision to tap and run a penalty award instead of kicking the easy goal that was on offer later on.

The Dragons posted a last minute try that won them the game – just.
