LOOSE forward Simon Giles posted a first-half treble as Clayton demolished Division Two visitors Hollinwood 68-4 at Lidget Green in the Pennine League.

The opening ten minutes gave no indication of the mayhem that was about to take place, with both sides guilty of a catalogue of handling mistakes.

The Villagers' fortunes took a welcome turn for the better when stand-off Dane Bairstow weaved his way to the chalk – soon followed by another try from hooker Josh Lanfear, who burrowed his way over from short range.

Bairstow added the first of his ten conversions to put the hosts well on their way 10-0 and it was one-way traffic from then until the half time-whistle.

Giles showed his class with three splendid touchdowns, together with solo efforts from scrum half Devon Gurney and substitute Barry Coombes.

The visitors were under the cosh at 38-0 on the resumption but they avoided a dreaded nil return as a number of near misses led the way to a plucky unconverted try.

Yet it was merely a token resistance as Clayton continued their unrelenting procession to the chalk.

Gurney and Bairstow both collected their second tries and centre Michael Cunliffe also showed a clean pair of heels to cross.

Prop forward Chris Anderson, who had a wow of a game, capped his debut by powering his way to a late brace and completing a 12-try hammering that bodes well for the forthcoming campaign.

Bradford Victoria Rangers climbed to third in Division One following their narrow 38-36 win at Cutsyke Raiders, who slipped to fourth.

The Vics could only muster 12 men for the journey to face a full-strength Wakefield side who are renowned for their formidable pack.

The hosts struck first but Rangers were soon back on level terms through second-row forward Josh Hattie.

Full back Jordon Walker was a beacon as their last line of defence and also proved his attacking prowess with two touchdowns.

Centre Aiden Scully also made the scoreboard tick over, alongside the reliable boot of marksman stand-off Sam Thornton, while the speed and agility of wingman Cameron Foster earned its full reward when he crossed for the winning try.

The Vics man of the match award was collected by prop Jake Swinscoe, who completed a full 80-minute stint and emphasising the spirit needed to pull off a splendid victory against the odds.
