WYKE were involved in a fantastic Pennine League Division One game at Whinmoor Warriors, with neither side able to deal the killer blow as the scoring finished 34-34.

Visitors' coach Warren Pitman said: "We massively underestimated a tricky Whinmoor side and, despite scoring some fine tries from set-pieces, our defence, energy and composure let us down."

Ryan Kershaw was in top form, scoring three good tries, his hat-trick effort being a nice pick up off an Ian Wormald offload.

Wormald also got in on the act as he crossed to maintain his try-per-game record, and Calvin Barker, Sam Kitson, Alec Williams and Ben Proctor all touched down for tries but poor one-on-ones and some lazy defending allowed Whinmoor to claw themselves back into the match.

Ben Proctor, just 16, was the star of the show, securing some tricky touchline conversions to record another 100 per cent record with the boot.

Pitman added: "We're very disappointed with our game management and composure. We are learning some lessons the hard way at the moment.

"They were unpredictable and dangerous. Credit them, they came at us and I think they caught us cold."

However, Pitman will have been pleased with how Proctor is progressing, as well as Lee Birkett, who tore holes in the Whinmoor defence in a real example of how to fight fire with fire.

Birkenshaw had a tough afternoon at leaders Moorends Thorne Marauders, going down 62-0.

The visitors did not disgrace themselves, however, given that they were forced to give debuts to four under-20s and had three players who took to the field despite carrying various knocks.

As if things weren't bad enough, Birky also lost veteran Simon Owen to a long-term injury, the journeyman forward playing for 75 minutes with a torn bicep.

Callum Wilkinson also battled on for an hour with a damaged ankle.

Owen rolled back the years with a defensive masterclass, but overall Bury found the task too big.

But Birky can take a lot of positives from their battling attitude and will look forward to a rest this weekend due to the Grand Final before taking on Sherburn Bears on Saturday, October 15.
