PRECISION kicking by stand-off Liam Coe helped focused West Bowling to a 32-16 victory in the Pennine League against Upton at Emsley's Rec.

West's, who are running neck and neck with Fryston Warriors in a two-horse race for the Premier Division title, made a telling start when wingman Jake Green used his pace on the right flank to cross for the opener.

Upton responded almost immediately, which caused Bowling to march downfield in style and set up field position for prop Ryan Patchett to power onto a short pass, leaving Coe to tag on the extras.

An intelligent Coe grubber kick behind the defence then set up a touchdown for full back Max Trueman, Coe landing the conversion on quarter-time to give the hosts clear water at 16-4 – and that scoreline remained up to the break as conditions underfoot deteriorated.

The Pontefract visitors closed the gap on the restart with a six-pointer, before substitute forward Chris Watson ran into a hole to race 50 metres for a cracker.

The magic boot of Coe once more came to the fore when he spotted the Upton defence all at sea to hoist a pin-point kick out wide, enabling wingman Chris Curtain to touch down in acres of space.

West's then celebrated a job well done when substitute three-quarter Karl Spring sprinted in from 80 metres out to make it 32-10.

Upton managed another score against tired legs before the end but Coe, who also finished with four conversions, was pipped for the man of the match award by the industrious Patchett, while Bowling were also well served by packmen Richard Lumb and Danny Halmshaw.

Queensbury had an easy two points added to their Championship Division standings when New Earswick All Blacks failed to show up.

In Division One, Victoria Rangers gained some solace from a good performance in their 22-10 home defeat against Lindley Swifts.

Clayton forward Steve Housecroft came off the bench to post a brace of tries in his side's hefty 42-4 Division Three West win at Worth Village.

Stand-off Scott Pendlebury and sub Phil Redgrave, plus props John Parkinson and Jamie Waterman, also made the chalk, leaving marksman centre Ryan Wilkinson to add six goals and a touchdown.

Old-timer Johnny Alderson also got onto the scoresheet with a penalty.
