WEST Bowling succumbed to a 42-12 defeat at Doncaster Toll Bar in the Pennine League, despite a bright opening to the Premier Division contest.

Winger Karl Spring crossed for Bowling, following fine work from Jake Green, and Ben Heald successfully converted.

But the loss of Robert Young with concussion had even greater significance when replacement Danny Halmshaw was sin-binned for a ball steal over the line.

Toll Bar made the extra man count, scoring three tries without reply before half-time.

Bowling hit back after the break when Chris Curtain chipped over and found James Crabb in support to touch down, Heald again adding the extras. But Max Trueman was later sent to the bin for a professional foul.

Despite Doncaster also occupying one of the sin-bin spots, it was not enough to stop them from running in three late tries.

Bowling coach Glenn Barraclough said: "The score didn't reflect the game but Toll Bar were worthy winners."

Odsal Sedbergh got off to a great start in the Championship Division when they overcame Brotherton Bulldogs 20-12 in a bruising encounter.

The Bulldogs arrived with a fearsome pack but Sedge stuck to the game-plan and played some fine rugby.

Their spirit was epitomised by club captain Josh Tordoff, who helped himself to two tries as Sedge claimed a well-earned two points.

West Bowling A inflicted a 72-4 defeat on Worth Village in Division Three West.

Bowling's junior players stepped up to the mark – with promising hooker Harry Williams in outstanding form, posting five tries.

Williams was ably supported by centre Mathew Hines (3), Ellis Bentley and John Abson, while Ethan Egerton-Sharp had a fine afternoon with the boot as he landed 12 kicks from 12.
