WYKE’S legendary forward Jack “Nicky” Newton has died aged 83.

Nicky, as he was universally known, was regarded as one of best amateur forwards in the Bradford League during his career in the 1950 and 60s.

While smaller in stature in comparison with some of his peers, he was a ferocious tackler and had a clever passing game.

In an age of fiercely contested scrums, Nicky was the stand-out pack leader in an accomplished team that never lost a Bradford Cup final in the swinging sixties and was always a force to be reckoned with during his long association with the black and whites.

His funeral will be held at St Winifred’s Church, Wibsey at 1pm on Tuesday, April 28

There will also be a minute's silence in memory of Nicky and Trevor Wilkinson, the former Queensbury secretary who died recently, prior to the Jack Senior Bradford Cup final between West Bowling and Queensbury at the Provident Stadium on Saturday.

* Queensbury's third string finished their Division Six West home campaign with a fantastic performance and victory over Kings Cross A.

Despite going behind in the opening minutes, Bury hit back to win 52-6.

Half-back Andrew Barraclough orchestrated play while picking up a try. Other scorers were Rory Brooke, Tom Hart, Liam Dover (2), Joe Bryan and blockbusting second row Rob Nagy (2). Full back Ryan Hearn bagged the man of the match, scoring two tries and kicking six conversions.

In Division Four, West Bowling A went down 44-8 at Eastmoor. However they were delighted with the debut of promising 16-year-old Ethen Egerton Sharp, who scored two unconverted tries on his senior debut.
