A SOLITARY first-half try from loose forward Richard Lumb set West Bowling en route to an 18-4 win in the Pennine President's Cup second round against Premier Division adversaries Queensbury at Hill Top.

The opening exchanges were feisty but eventually settled down into some measure of normality after two players from each side were dispatched to the sin-bin.

Bowling took advantage of the extra space with the touchdown from the mighty Lumb, leaving scrum half Ben Heald to add the extras for the only score of the opening half.

Queensbury, with the slope now in their favour, would have regarded it as a first half well done – but it was Wests who struck again when second-row forward Jason Marshall ran a good angle to reach the chalk, Heald once again on target with the kick.

Bowling made the game safe on the hour mark when centre Ross Walker finished off a quick handling burst on the edge and Heald added another conversion.

'Bury, with prop Andrew Senior setting a splendid example, finished strongly to set up a consolation effort out wide. But Bowling packmen Olly Bartle and Joe Lumb stepped up to the plate to ensure a late shutdown to make the game safe.

Victoria Rangers eased into the semi-finals of the Jack Senior Memorial Bradford Cup with a 48-6 win against Clayton at Lidget Green.

The Vics did not have it all their own way at the start as the hosts put their defence to the test through the Villagers' long-serving duo Scott Pendlebury and Simon Giles. But once they got the scoreboard rolling, they were in clear water at 22-0 up at the break.

But full back Duane Platt marked his return from injury with the try of the match to leave Wyke in charge 22-10 at the break.

The second period was scrappy but the hosts made sure of success with a match-winning touchdown from prop Ian Wormald.

Victoria Rangers were on the wrong end of a 22-16 scoreline against Division Six West promotion rivals Meltham All Blacks, notwithstanding touchdowns from Johnny Fawthrop, Robert Stones and Hayden Sugden.
