Pennine League club Wyke’s days of changing in a disused air-raid shelter are almost over.

The club, who have teams in Division One and Division Seven, are set to receive state-of-the-art facilities thanks to Bradford Council’s Sport and Leisure Service.

Later this month, brand new changing rooms, a pavilion and club room will be lowered into place by a crane at Wyke Recreation Ground.

Following the opening of Appleton Academy, the club have been using the changing facilities at the school.

Coun Andrew Thornton, Bradford Council’s executive member for environment and sport, said: “The improvements to the facilities have been possible after council officers supported the club in their application to obtain funding of over £200,000 from both Sport England and the Biffa Award.

“The Biffa Award is a multi-million pound fund which awards grants to community and environmental projects across the UK funded from landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services.”

Wyke first used the old air-raid shelter since 1948 but the new facilities are the culmination of over 20 years’ hard work.
