LIZZIE Jones has expressed her gratitude for "the amazing support" on show at the Danny Jones Memorial Game.

More than 1,000 fans turned up at Cougar Park on Sunday as both sides paid tribute to popular stand-off Danny, following his untimely death on May 3, aged just 29.

The Welsh international collapsed and died after suffering a cardiac arrest during the Cougars' game against London Skolars, despite extensive efforts to resuscitate him.

As a tribute to Jones – and to raise money for his young family – Wales coach John Kear brought his side to Keighley for the memorial match.

The national side ran out 36-20 winners, but the final result was largely irrelevant to the watching crowd, who were keen to honour the memory of their former player.

Danny's widow, Lizzie, took to Twitter to express her gratitude for the match.

She tweeted: "What a fantastic day at @Cougarmania me and the twins are so grateful and so humbled by the amazing support and love from everyone xx."

The Danny Jones fund has now raised around £280,000 for his family, which includes twins Bobby and Phoebe.

Speaking after the game, Kear – who also coaches Batley – was pleased that the Wales team were able to show their support for their former team-mate

He said: “The players played for nothing for Danny Jones’ family and the event was a worthwhile exercise all round.”
