Keighley Cougars 66 South Wales Scorpions 6

COUGARS assistant coach Adam Mitchell reiterated the need for the side to not get carried away with themselves as they eased to victory which kept them at the League One summit.

“Today was as easy as it gets for us, he said. “It’s important to keep our feet on the ground as next week it’s the bread and butter stuff against Rochdale and we need to keep Cougar Park as a fortress.”

Keighley opened the scoring after six minutes when Josh Lynam raced over next to the posts from Gavin Duffy’s pass.

Bradford-loanee Adam Brook scored his first of the afternoon when he eased to the line when the Scorpions’ left a huge gap open for the young stand-off to stroll through.

The home side were in cruise control and minutes later, Rikki Sheriffe dived over in the corner after a short offload from Brendon Rawlins.

Danny Lawton was next to touch down when he got his hand to Paul Handforth’s well-placed grubber.

Paul March’s side finished the half with three tries in six minutes to effectively end the game as a contest.

Andy Gabriel got the first of what would be an eventual hat-trick, squeezing over next to the corner post after Rikki Sheriffe got the offload away.

The young winger grabbed his second when James Feather, on his return from concussion, placed a perfectly-executed offload into the hands of Gabriel who touched down near to the corner.

South Wales had a rare moment to savour when a kick by Paul Emanuelli was taken by Liam Darville but Tala Petelo stripped the full back of the ball to score.

Brook grabbed his second when he turned through Anthony Symon’s attempted tackle to get himself down.

And from the next attack, Ash Lindsay managed to fight over to the left of the posts’ from Handforth’s assist.

Lindsay turned provider when his wonderful floating pass over the top to Gabriel allowed him to fly down the wing to wrap up his first treble at first-grade level.

There were scenes of jubilation to follow the next Keighley try when Neil Cherryholme fell over the line, only his second in 57 appearances for the club.

Debutant Samir Tahraoui’s break two minutes from time left numerous bodies in its wake and completed another heavy defeat for the visitors when he opted to offload out the back to allow Handforth to race over.
