Thackley
Relief as record stays intact
The only club in the Northern Counties East Premier Division who have been there since its
inception have maintained that record.
And it is an achievement which Thackley are proud of.
Some say it shows a lack of ambition, others realise just how difficult it has been for the Dennyfield outfit to keep its head above the waterline over those 26 years.
Last Saturday's win over Arnold Town ensured Thackley would be making it a record-breaking 27th season in the division next term.
After flirting with relegation, the issue was settled with two games to spare.
"It has made a difference to us knowing we are safe and the club's record is
unbroken," said head coach John Boyle.
"We have had some good results over recent weeks and you walk off at the end thinking that will have eased any lingering worries' only to find other clubs have won on the day.
"We were picking up points and results but not climbing away from the lower
reaches of the table.
"It was a bit disconcerting but we kept plugging away and eventually we reached mathematical safety."
Bottom club Glasshoughton look doomed, with Lincoln Moorlands Railway and South Normanton Athletic battling to avoid the
second relegation spot.
However, Boyle thinks both the latter could survive.
He said: "I don't think two clubs will go down, not with the UniBond League
restructuring, but that
cannot affect your mindset and attitude.
"The fact that it was so hard to finally reach our target didn't surprise me.
"I have been saying that the clubs down there with us were as good as any in the division. It has been a tight league and the quality of the so-called strugglers is there for anyone to see."
