FARSLEY Celtic missed the chance to claim the outright leadership of Division One North last night when they suffered a shock home defeat to AFC Goole in the Evo-Stik League.

The Celts had spent months hunting down long-term leaders Lancaster City, and finally overhauled them at the weekend, but were top on goal difference only as they hosted second-from-bottom Goole.

The meeting didn’t follow the script, however, and the relegation- threatened Vikings triumphed over the Celts.

The visitors ran out 2-1 winners, with all three goals coming in the first half.

Farsley had a dream start as Paul Walker gave them a fifth-minute lead with a well-struck shot from distance, but they conceded a penalty three minutes later, and Bobby Johnson stepped up to level the scores.

The home side were dominating possession and territory but it was the Vikings who took a lead into the break after Johnson netted his second to complete a good move from the visitors.

Farsley kept coming at Goole and hit the woodwork in stoppage time but they failed to break down Goole’s resilient defence.

It was a different story for Brighouse Town as they strolled to a 4-0 win at struggling Ossett Albion.

The Unicorns had been beaten 2-1 by a last-gasp goal at Farsley at the weekend, but they were brushed aside by Paul Quinn’s Town just three days later.

Mike Fish headed Brighouse in front minutes before the break, and Ben Wharton turned from provider to scorer as he doubled the visitors’ lead eight minutes after the interval.

Goals from Luke Parkin and Tom Haigh saw Town through to a comfortable win.

Meanwhile, in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League, both Thackley and Liversedge were held to home draws in the Premier Division.

The Dennyboys climbed back into the top four with a 3-3 draw against third-placed Bridlington Town.

A strike from new recruit Matt Broadley gave Thackley the lead but the visitors were ahead by the break following goals from Joel Sutton and Chris Jenkinson.

Another recent signing, Adam Jones, equalised for the home side before Brid edged back in front through Tim Taylor but Thackley’s former Bantam Luke O’Brien netted the last goal to earn the Dennyboys a deserved point from an entertaining encounter.

Sedge also gained a point from the visit of a club just above them in the table as they drew 1-1 with AFC Mansfield.

Tom Brook gave the hosts a first-half lead but Oliver Fearon levelled for the Midlanders midway through the second period.
