LUKE O’Brien left Thackley recently with the club’s best wishes but there were pangs of regret that he would no longer be around.

The former Bradford City defender had lost his appetite for the game after leaving Valley Parade and having a bad time with injuries. Still in his mid 20’s he quit playing and concentrated on his family.

Like any true football man, the disaffection was short-lived and he was soon missing the game. More than the game had missed him, because when he wanted to get his boots back on opportunities at the level he was used to were few and far between.

However, his local friendly club was there and he made his comeback as a Dennyboy.

Thackley spokesman Mark Holstead said: “He wasn’t interested in a pay packet he just wanted to play for the love of the game. We were absolutely delighted that he chose us and we welcomed him aboard.”

With his name back in the consciousness it wasn’t long before people were inquiring about his situation and Vanarama Conference North outfit Bradford Park Avenue came in for him.

Avenue had just lost regular left back Martin Drury to a career-ending injury but they had a ready-made replacement almost on their doorstep.

Holstead said: “I wish Luke had been around a little bit longer but he left in the right way and will always be welcome here. He has jumped up four leagues so you have be glad for him.

“It was easy wishing him well because Luke showed fantastic attitude and commitment in his time with us. He was a pro at City and their player of the year a couple of years ago but he came here and was just like one of the lads.

“It was good for us to attract him and it suited both parties at the time. I think it’s a testament to this club that he was here and he is a top, top lad on and off the field. I hope he calls in to see us from time to time when his new club’s not got a game in the Conference."
